We will be using some of these stratagies when we get stuck on a "tricky" word. "Tricky" is a preferred word to use instead of "hard" for a word the students do not know. If I use the word "hard," the students seem to shut down and do not try to figure out the unknown word out. If I use the word "tricky", the students feel it is more of a game or a challenge and they do try to solve the word.
Readers don't try every strategy when they get mixed up...they try the one that makes the most sense! Throughout the year we will learn many strategies to try when we get mixed up in our texts.
